Description
Set against the backdrop of the Cotswold hills, historic Sudeley Castle is surrounded by fourteen acres of magnificent gardens, which won the HHA/Christies Garden of the Year Award in 1996.
The romantic gardens are a plantsman delight, featuring an array of old fashioned and species roses whilst ancient stonework and ruins form a backdrop for scores of established climbers.
Designed as almost a continuation of the castle they surround the 10 individual gardens range from the intricately detailed Knot Garden, to the bold areas of planting surrounding the spectacular 15th century Tithe Barn ruins. Victorian topiary provides the perfect frame for the formal gardens whilst continuing subtly into the wilder areas.
Sudeley's gardens delight throughout the seasons with spring highlights including a myriad of tulips transforming the White Garden. Summer welcomes the beauty of the old-fashioned roses and herbs in the Queens Garden, furnished on two sides by double yew hedges planted by Emma Dent. The Secret Garden uses the protection of walls to create a semi-mediterranean feel, with colourful planting lasting long into the autumnal months.
A Wildflower Meadow and Butterfly Conservation Area thrive on the organic gardening principles implemented by Sudeley and the Heritage Seed Library, laid out as a Victorian Kitchen Garden, working in conjunction with HDRA to help preserve rare and traditional types of vegetable.
